Happy New Year!
This blog is coming very late, but better than never.
(The video is up on the YouTube Channel so you can give it a watch if you don’t feel like reading.)
This year I got straight to the point and It worked out well with life being busy and stressful during this time of year. November and December really bring on financial stress, the anxiety of showing people how much you love them VIA physical gifts and showing up and giving your time. The New Year usually brings some anxiety. How your going to show up this year? Are you changing to grow and be better? Are you going to wake up at 5AM? I do feel like this pressure truly comes from within. I know that is something I struggle with every year. Let’s dive into some things that can organize the chaos.
1. Declutter
My favourite and least favourite task that is an emotional roller coaster. Pick a few spaces that are problem areas and tackle them one at a time. I have made a habit to do one space, or problem area a month. I loop this in with a monthly deep clean. It makes it a lot less crazy for when the New Year creeps up on us rather quickly.
I say this as Dylan and I are currently tackling our closet and my clothes are in three massive piles in two different rooms.
2. Digital declutter
This one isn’t for everyone, but I do like to go through my photos and save them to an external hard drive, go through downloads, and my desktop and if i can more things around that i know where to find them, then i’ve done a good days work. I do a mini declutter weekly before I start my weekend. Little habits like this make it easier to manage the big project down the road.
3. Update your systems
How can you make sure you do the “goals” or habits you want to tackle this year? Make them barrier free. Set your shoes by the door if you want to go for more walks. Pick out your workout clothes and leave them somewhere visible. Leave your vitamins near your water bottle in your bathroom or on the kitchen counter next to the coffee maker. Less friction will help you get closer to your goals or habits.
4.Vision boards
The best part in my opinion! Get excited for the new year with making a wallpaper or vision board and keep it somewhere you can see it all the time. I have mine as my background on my computer. I see it daily, multiple times. It gets me excited for the things I want to accomplish and experience this year!
5. Goals
After visualizing and seeing all these images that might’ve gotten you hyped up, it’s time to write them out! Whether it’s a bucket lists or goals you want to achieve, places you wanted to travel to, or habits you want to get better at. You can include feelings, values, anything to get you excited about aligning for the New Year. I like to call mine a bucket list. Mostly because I resonate better with a list I can cross things off. Some of mine are maintaining a run streak, duolingo streak, travel to a new continent, and fast packing in the mountains!
6. Update your routine
The key ingredient to accomplishing your goals. A routine that works for you. If you need to work in practicing a new habit or skill you need to make time for it. My routine changes as the seasons do. We have more light during the Summers and I am more energized vs the winter when we get as little as 7 hours of light on the darkest day in the winter. Your body clock needs to adjust too. Make sure to keep this in mind when planning. It’s good to switch things up when you need to as well.
7. Self care
I don’t mean dropping a ton of money on skin care. This is all the things that make you feel happy and good. A walk, seeing a friend, maybe booking a dentist appointment and so on. The focus is you first and making sure that you, yourself are healthy, happy and as stress free as can be.
8. Reflecting + journaling
Every year I do a big reflection. What went well, what didn’t, what was hard, what was memorable. This year I also wrote a letter to myself to read at the end of 2025. If you want to do it too, don’t wait for the New Year. Just write it now. So much changes between now and December 31st!
9. Budgeting
Organizing your finances is another way of taking care of yourself. Everyone does it differently. It’s good to know what’s going on with your spending, so set aside some time to go over it! This year im tracking every dollar i spend and make. A daunting challenge!
10. Organize your phone so it works for you
- Hide any distraction apps
- Set up your focuses.
- Block apps at a specific time of day
I’ve made my phone super boring so that I can spend more time living intentionally then just staring at a screen when i’m with people, or when I could be doing something better with my time.
Lastly,
11. Non Negotiables
I like to keep a list of non negotiables and I use this to guide me on the daily. If i had a bad day, I have a list of things that i must do before bed or before the day ends.
- Ten minute tidy
- Make my bed
- Walk 20 minutes
- Drink 2L of water
- No dishes in the sink
- Prep the coffee machine
I check in on a reset almost every quarter and make sure that i’m on track for my goals, that i’m not collecting anything that isn’t of use. My routine is aligned with my goals and my spending is on track. I hope this helps with your start of the New Year. Whether your starting late like me, or your looking to incorporate a little more to your NY reset!
