YouTube for 2 years
I started on this Journey in late 2021.
No plan. No official camera.
Just a girl and her iphone filming life.
I remember being so unhappy with my work. I was so excited to finally have a “big girl job”. I had just finished school and put so much effort in, in hopes of having a much better future. My first job was anything but exciting. I had a big title and wasn’t able to do anything. The owner was always so scared of making a final decision, projects I was working on would just come to a halt. I made one brochure, tidied up a website and then had to make candles. Yes, I literally made candles for service call gifts. That’s pretty much all I accomplished in the year and half I was at this place.
What do you do when you feel stuck at a job? Start looking for new jobs! At this time, we were coming up to the New Year and I thought to myself: “What do I see myself doing, for me. Not for work.” I have always loved creative things. I used to take Lululemon’s product photos for instagram when each city had their own social account, (I still have those photos on a hard drive. They are hard to look at). In any previous job I had, I wanted to be apart of the marketing in some capacity. Emails, photos or community events. I really liked sales and ecommerce and thought it was so cool how easy it was for a small business to get up and running online.
So naturally, me being me, I decided to challenge myself. This time with Vlogging on YouTube. I wanted to post 1 video every week for a year. Why? I wanted to be creative and I wanted to be disciplined. I wanted to get better at a skill that I was okay at, and wanted to get much better at. I knew I was pretty comfortable with public speaking and, talking to a camera didn’t really phase me, so I got to work right away!
I had no idea what I wanted my videos to be about, so I just filmed my day-to-day. Then I realized I could be sharing things that make my life easier: Monthly Resets, Admin days, New Year Resets, Planning just about anything, and how I organize my life, as it was so busy back then. This has been a common theme throughout, but recently I have had more time to plan out topics i’m interested in or passionate about. I can script, write down ideas for shots I need. Plan ahead and be ahead of my schedule instead of, filming and editing everything in the same week.
I look back to my older videos and i’m still so impressed with how well they were done for not knowing much, and putting myself up for the challenge of doing something that I wasn’t super familiar with. As I edit videos now, I reflect on how this process has brought me freelance work and job prospects over time. I am a lot faster at everything from editing to filming. I am also working on new challenges within just posting one video a week. Other topics that i’m curious about, what places I can go with my camera and, how I could inspire someone who is also in need of a creative life shift to start something new.
